Happy New Year - 2009 Fox's Year Of The "Magic Negro"!
During the New Year's broadcast, Fox News let a scrolling text bar message through that stated, "HAPPY NEW YEAR AND LET'S HOPE THE MAGIC NEGRO DOES A GOOD JOB. LOVE JEN AND JOHN C."
The video of it being played live is above. Fox made a response via Fox News VP of programming Suzanne Scott, where she stated, "We received tens of thousands of text message submissions during our New Years Eve special, and this particular viewer submission was inadvertently cleared for air. At FOX we recognize our error as opposed to networks who allow their hosts to utter crude vulgarities to the public."
When Barack Obama became president elect, there were several stories saying that America has finally come to the age of blurring races and becoming one people. And for the most part, we agree. There are always going to be people of prejudice, and we hope that this incident does not turn the US back into a country of segregated peoples.
We can look anywhere in any country and find "the village idiot" syndrome. It is, however, unfortunate that a national news program like Fox propagated the message without thinking about it.
But even then, we do have a free country or free speech, so everything is still the dual edged sword it will always be.
We think that the most important thing is how we react to things like this. So we post this as the latest trend of unfortunate media events that will not become the end of the world as we know it.
Barack, or for that case ANY person in the position, has a lot of work to do, not to prove themselves so much as to repair what has been broken. Like the US automobile industry.
It comes down to trying to repair 30 years of mismanagement with 6 months of repairing skills, good luck, and maybe, just maybe, a little bit of magic!
