Mobile Internet Useage On The Rise With Blackberry Internet Service

There was a large increase in Blackberry Internet service in last quarter of 2008.

"Approximately 2.6 million net new BlackBerry® subscriber accounts were added in the quarter. At the end of the quarter, the total BlackBerry subscriber account base increased from the prior quarter by approximately 14% to approximately 21 million."

It does not seem to be slowing down, either. It is predicted that an additional 2.9 million subscribers will come by the end of the next quarter. The drive is the cell phone industry trying to turn the cell phone into the "swiss army" knife of communications.

Despite the decline of the economy in the U.S. and other countries, the usage continues to grow momentum. The use is primary email and Internet browsing, with news channels and YouTube actually being the most Internet generated traffic.

The newest and largest trend appears to be coming from users on air plane flights. Although the Federal Aviation Administration still prohibits the use of cell phones on flight, it is not blocking people from using their phones for Internet browsing, email, and texting. Interestingly, they are still blocking VOIP so that programs like Skype is not being used.
